When it comes to resurfacing your driveway, tarmac (or asphalt) is a classic for a reason. It’s durable, weather-resistant, and provides a smooth finish that’s perfect for families and heavy vehicles.

However, one of the biggest decisions our customers at Initial Driveway Installations face is whether to go for a standard tarmac finish or to add a decorative block-paved border. Both options have their merits, and since we’ve been transforming driveways since 2018, we’re here to help you weigh them up.

Option 1: The Standard Tarmac Driveway (The Minimalist Choice)

A standard tarmac driveway is all about sleek, clean lines and maximum functionality. If you prefer a "no-fuss" look that lets your house take center stage, this is for you.

The Pros:

Cost-Effective: Without the manual labor involved in laying individual blocks, this is often the most budget-friendly way to cover a large area.
Fast Installation: We can often complete the surface in a shorter timeframe.
Seamless Look: A solid black or red tarmac surface looks modern and uniform.

The Cons:

It can sometimes look a bit "industrial" without a decorative element to break up the dark surface.

Option 2: Tarmac with Block Paved Borders (The Premium Choice)

This is where functionality meets high-end design. By installing a row of blocks (or "setts") around the perimeter, you create a striking contrast in texture and color.

The Pros:

Instant Curb Appeal: The border acts like a picture frame, making the driveway look more expensive and professionally finished.
Edge Protection: The blocks provide a physical "rebound" edge that helps prevent the tarmac from crumbling at the sides over time.
